Common Garage Door Tune-Ups
After hundreds of repetitive trips up and down, you will find your garage door in need of a tune-up. Loose hinge screws, ripped rubber seal, and bent roller shafts are the three most common garage door repairs.
The First step to making garage door repairs is to simply open the door, as many repairs will require you to disconnect the extension spring. NEVER attempt to disconnect the spring when the door is closed. If you have an automatic garage door, you will need to unplug the automatic door opener and lock the door in place by placing a C-clamp on the track above and below the rollers. If you have a manually operated door, you will need to remove the bottom bracket and roller by disconnecting the extension spring.
Fixing a loose hinge: First, remove the hinge and screws. Next, you will need to drill completely through the door to create new holes. Finally, you will want to replace the old screws with ¼ x 2 ½ inch bolts, washer, and nuts to prevent holes from stripping.
Replacing ripped rubber seals for both wooden and metal garage doors is easy. For wood doors, you just simply need to remove the roofing nails holding the old seal in place and replace with a new rubber seal. For metal doors, you will need to disconnect the extension spring, lift cable, bottom roller, and bottom bracket to easily slide out the old seal and slide in the new seal.
To replace bent rollers, you will need to simply remove the hinge and twist the track. Replace old rollers with new oiled roller shaft and bearing. You will want to oil the roller shaft every 6 months to keep the door working smoothly.
